Big Little Town’s hit song “Girl Crush,” was released in 2014 as the second single from their sixth album called “Pain.” The song was written by Hillary Lindsey, Lori McKenna, and Liz Rose. There are many different interpretations of what the song could be about. Some believe the song is about a girl who becomes obsessed with another girl because she stole her lover. While others say, it’s about a girl who obsesses over another girl who’s with the man she wants to be with but never had. However, the song isn’t about a girl having a crush on another girl, as the song’s title might imply.
The song and album proved to be a huge commercial success story for Big Little Town. As of last November, the single has sold over 2.5 million copies in the U.S and was the number one song on the Billboard Hot Country Songs in 2014, where it reigned supreme for 13 consecutive weeks. It also peaked at number 18 on the Billboard all-genre Hot 100 chart, becoming Little Big Town’s highest-charting single on that chart. However, the song drew some controversy as a few listeners urged country music radio stations not to play the song, as they believed that it promoted “lesbianism.” In this video from 2015, we see Adam Lambert and Leona Lewis sing a gripping cover of “Girl Crush” at the 2015 CMT Artists of the Year special in honor of Little Big Town.
This performance really allowed Lambert to show off his dramatic range as he starts the song off with his powerfully soulful vocals. When Lewis joins him on stage, she delivers her own sultry vocals as the two take turns emoting the song’s heartbreakingly beautiful message. In 2016, Lambert and Lewis’ performance was nominated for “Performance of the Year at the CMT Music Awards.
